Elevate Your Event Videography: Video production advice to Captivate Your Audience

In the world of event videography, capturing moments that truly resonate with your audience is key. As technology evolves, so do our filming techniques. One common issue I’ve encountered lately is the challenge of camera height when using the screen on the back of the camera to view what we’re filming.

The Evolution of Camera Screens

Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love the convenience of having a screen on the back of our cameras. It opens up new possibilities for shooting that would have been quite difficult in the past. This screen allows us to achieve angles and perspectives that enhance the storytelling aspect of our videos. Additionally, it enables us to tuck our elbows in, providing a steadier shot. With the added stabilisation of the camera, it can almost mimic the effect of using a gimbal.

The Downside: Eye Contact and Perspective

However, there’s a downside that we need to address – eye contact. When filming an event, the camera should act like a member of the party, seamlessly blending in so the viewer feels like they’re part of the action. Unfortunately, many recent event videos I’ve seen suffer from poor perspective, making it appear as if the footage was shot by a 10-year-old. The low camera height gives the viewer a skewed, almost child-like perspective of the event.

A Simple Yet Effective Tip

So, here’s a simple yet effective tip for your next event: lift the camera. Whether you’re using a professional camera or just your phone, raising the camera to eye level can make a significant difference. By doing so, you ensure the footage reflects a more natural and engaging viewpoint, akin to how an attendee would experience the event.

Enhancing Viewer Engagement

Remember, the goal is to make the viewer feel as if they were there, right in the midst of the celebration. Appropriate camera height is crucial in achieving this. It enhances eye contact and creates a more immersive experience, drawing the audience into the event.

Conclusion

Next time you’re filming an event, keep this tip in mind. Elevate your camera to eye level and consider the viewer’s perspective. It’s a small adjustment that can have a huge impact on the quality and engagement of your footage.

I hope this pro tip helps you capture your next event in the best possible light. Happy filming, and I look forward to sharing more insights with you soon!
